so do crackers and gherkin dip
I don't think I would ever get anything done if it weren't for deadlines. And if we're being honest, nor would anyone else. I started today with a pile of stories to write and phone calls to make, eight hours to do it in and a pretty low energy level. Seven hours later my workload has been more than dented, it's been well mangled and even has some serious looking holes in it. In fact you could say it looks as if it will collapse within the hour. My energy level has remained pretty stable (however it is momentarily buoyed by the salada crackers and gherkin dip I just supped upon) but I've worked steadily and it has paid off.
So the odds were against me but I'm overcoming them. Let me tell you this though: if tomorrow weren't production day I bet you almost anything I would have written little more than 2 1/2 stories today. This is where the magical power of deadlines come in. Sure, people hate them because they're stressful and make your hair come out by the nail-bitten handful but along with those jagged talons and uncoiffed mop comes productivity. As evidenced by my nearly-completed liftout. Moreover, I'm thankful for deadlines today because the two people I'm relying on for columns have both promised me they will email them by the end of the work day. Strong odds that they'll both come at ten to five, but they'll come.
In an hour I will sigh a well earned sigh of relief -- but there's more to do before then,
